MYTHS ABOUT THIS SNAKE.

There are several myths concerning this snake and some of them can get a novis herper in deep trouble. It is always smart to learn all you can about a species of snake before you aquire it, this is especially true of venomous species. Below are a few of the myths I have seen floating around on the Net.

Myth #1. The FWC has venom equal to a Timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus).

Fact #1. The only snake with venom equal to a Timber rattlesnake is another Timber rattlesnake from the same area. How this got started is anyones guess but nothing could be farther from the truth. The only thing these two species of snake have in common is they are both reptiles and that is about that.

Myth #2. The FWC is rear fanged and there for not very dangerous.

Fact #2. The Boomslang ( Dysholidus typus ) is also a rear fanged snake and it has claimbed several human lives. Simply because the snake has to work a little harder to envenomate someone dosen't make it safe to handle. In the 1950's the Boomslang was big in the pet trade and look at the results.

Myth #3. The FWC is a good beginner snake.

Fact #3. Fact #2 should be enough to answer this myth.

Myth #4. The FWC has claimbed human lives in the past.

Fact #4. There have been NO death's resulting from bites by the FWC. The Inland taipan (Oxyuranus microlipidotus) is considered to have the most potent venom of any snake on Earth and it has never claimbed a human life, but that does not make it any safer.
