Hydrodynastes gigas is a large and robust snake attaining lengths of up to eight (8) feet. It is thick bodied like a viper and long and shiny like an Elapid. It is a very fast moving snake with an awsome bite. It also has extreamly powerful jaws.

In the wild it will "Hood up" when threatened which makes the snake look much larger and far more intemidating then it realy is. In captivity it slowly looses the will to hood as it becomes aclimated to the presence of humans.

The time when a bite is most probible is during feeding. As these snakes are heavy eaters they tend to become over anxious at supper time and bite anything that moves, hands included.

These snakes should always be fed with "tongs" and NEVER by holding a mouse by its tail.

Some species are mild and dosile through out their lives. These milder snakes tend to be captive born. Others have a wild side to their personality and these tend to be wild caught species, especially adult snakes.
